Canessa Gallery
San Francisco’s Historic Sanctuary for Lifelong Artists
For more than 50 years, Canessa Gallery has been at the center of San Francisco's rich artistic, literary, and cultural history. Housed in the landmark Canessa Building—a diminutive, old-brick gem—we are one of downtown’s last living links to a colorful, bohemian past. While the surrounding architecture has grown taller, our historic walls continue to glow with the light, life, and magic of artists at work.
Our Mission & Legacy
Since 1966, our mission has been simple: to support and showcase dedicated, lifelong artists.
To date, we have hosted over 600 emerging and established sculptors, painters, photographers, and performance and literary artists. Notable alumni include Trudy Myrrh Reagan, Mokhtar Paki, John Mattos, and Chico MacMurtrie.
